Today we took part in another Japanese ritual - "Osettai". I've been trying to work out what it is all about and from what I can tell the custom originated with the pilgrims who were given small gifts of food or money on their journeys.
Now in our area each year different houses participate and all the people in the area go to each participating house and give a small amount of money and pray and in return are given a small bag of snacks. Of course this day is a big favourite with the kids!
Today we also had the Japanese version of Parent-teacher interviews. The major difference is that unlike in New Zealand where the parents come to the school to talk to the teachers, the teachers here visit each child's house.... calling for huge amounts of cleaning to be done! I pity those teachers who have 40 children in their class!
